Google Ads Certification: What It's Really Worth

3 min read

"Google Ads certified agency" sounds reassuring. But what does the certification actually mean? And more importantly — does it guarantee the agency will deliver results for you?

Short answer: no. Here's why.

Google Ads Certifications Explained

Individual Certification (Skillshop)

Anyone can take the Google Ads certifications for free on Skillshop. There are 6 certifications: Search, Display, Video, Shopping, Measurement, and Apps.

What it proves: The person passed a multiple-choice exam and knows the theoretical basics of Google Ads. What it doesn't prove: That they know how to generate business results with a real budget.

Google Partner

The Google Partner badge is awarded to agencies that meet three criteria:

  1. Performance — account optimization score above 70%
  2. Spend — managing at least $10,000 in ad budget over 90 days
  3. Certifications — at least 50% of team members certified

What it proves: The agency manages a minimum volume of budget and follows Google's recommended best practices.

Google Premier Partner

The top 3% of Google Partner agencies. Same criteria as Partner, but with higher thresholds for spend and performance.

What Certification Doesn't Guarantee

  1. Business results — an agency can have an 80% optimization score and generate zero clients for you
  2. Industry expertise — the certification is generic, not industry-specific
  3. Business tracking — no certification requires CRM integration
  4. Landing page quality — not evaluated in Google's scoring
  5. Transparency — a certified agency can still create the account in their own name

How Some Agencies Game the System

Google's optimization score is an imperfect metric. Google frequently recommends increasing budgets, enabling broad match, and using Performance Max — because it generates more revenue for Google.

An agency that applies every Google recommendation will earn a high optimization score. But blindly following Google's recommendations isn't in the client's best interest — it's in Google's.

The best agencies maintain a score high enough to keep the badge (70%+) while declining recommendations that don't serve the client.

Why It's Still Necessary

Despite its limitations, Google Partner certification is a useful filter:

  • Minimum competency — it weeds out complete amateurs
  • Minimum volume — the agency manages at least a certain level of budget
  • Tool access — Partners get access to betas, Google support, and exclusive resources
  • Signal of professionalism — investing time in certification shows a baseline level of seriousness

It's a necessary but not sufficient criterion. Don't choose an agency BECAUSE it's certified. But don't choose an agency that ISN'T.
