Google Ads Editor is Google's free desktop application for managing your ad campaigns. It's the tool every account manager uses daily — and that most advertisers completely ignore.

If you manage your campaigns only through the web interface, you're wasting time. A lot of time.

What Is Google Ads Editor

Google Ads Editor is free software you install on your computer (Windows or Mac). It lets you download your Google Ads campaigns locally, edit them offline, then publish your changes all at once.

The Google Ads web interface is designed for viewing and making one-off changes. Google Ads Editor is designed for action at scale.

The difference is comparable to editing a text file in a browser versus using a spreadsheet. Both work. But one is 5-10x faster for bulk operations.

How to Download and Install Google Ads Editor

The download is free and straightforward:

  1. Go to ads.google.com/intl/en/home/tools/ads-editor/
  2. Click "Download Google Ads Editor"
  3. Install the software (Windows or Mac)
  4. Sign in with your Google Ads account
  5. Select the account to download

Installation takes less than 2 minutes. The initial download of your account depends on its size — expect 30 seconds to 5 minutes for most accounts.

Important point: remember to download the latest changes before each work session. The editor works on a local copy. If someone modified the account through the web interface in the meantime, you risk conflicts.

Bulk Edits

This is the number one reason to use Google Ads Editor. Need to change the destination URL of 200 ads? In the web interface, that's 200 clicks. In the editor, it's a copy-paste.

Campaign Copy-Paste

Duplicating an entire campaign in the web interface is tedious. In the editor, it's Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V.

Better yet: you can copy campaigns between accounts. If you manage multiple client accounts with similar structures, create the template campaign once and paste it into each account.

You can also copy elements between accounts via a CSV export file. Handy for sharing campaign structures with colleagues.

CSV Import and Export

Google Ads Editor lets you export campaigns to CSV, edit them in Excel or Google Sheets, then reimport. It's the fastest method for creating high-volume campaigns.

Concrete example: launching a Shopping campaign with 500 products. Rather than creating 500 ad groups manually, prepare a CSV file with all the rows and import it in one shot.

Pending Changes Preview

Before publishing, the editor displays a summary of all pending changes. You see exactly what will change: additions, modifications, deletions.

This is a huge advantage over the web interface where changes are applied immediately. With the editor, you have a permanent "draft mode."

Optimal Workflow with Google Ads Editor

Here's the process we follow at IOquery for each work session:

1. Download the Latest Changes

Always start by syncing. Click "Get recent changes" and select "All campaigns." This ensures you're working on the most current version.

2. Make Your Edits

Use the tree navigation on the left to select campaigns, ad groups, or keywords to modify. Filters and search let you precisely target the elements in question.

3. Validate Before Publishing

Before publishing, use the "Check changes" function. The editor detects errors (broken URLs, text too long, invalid formats) and flags them. Fix before publishing.

4. Publish in Batches

Don't publish everything at once if you're making significant changes. Publish by campaign or by change type. If a problem occurs, you'll identify the cause more easily.

5. Verify the Results

After publishing, go back to the web interface to confirm the changes were applied correctly. Pay special attention to ads that go into "Under review" status.

When to Use Editor vs the Web Interface

Google Ads Editor doesn't replace the web interface. Each excels in its domain.

Use Google Ads Editor for:

  • Bulk edits (more than 5 elements)
  • Creating new complex campaigns
  • Duplicating existing structures
  • Data import/export
  • Offline work

Stay on the web interface for:

  • Viewing performance and reports
  • Quick one-off changes
  • Managing automated bidding strategies
  • Reviewing Google recommendations

The ideal: the web interface for analysis, Google Ads Editor for execution.

Mistakes to Avoid

Not syncing before working. If you modify an outdated version of the account, your changes may overwrite edits made elsewhere.

Publishing without validation. Always use validation before publishing. An error in an imported CSV file can affect hundreds of ads.

Ignoring drafts. If you don't finish your edits, save them as a local draft. Closing the editor without saving means losing your work.

Using only the editor. Some features only exist in the web interface (Performance Max, certain extensions, advanced Smart Bidding). The editor doesn't always have every option.

A few shortcuts that make a real difference daily:

  • Ctrl+H: Find and Replace
