A $127.43 charge appears on your bank statement. You didn't authorize anything. The description reads "GOOGLE *ADS." Your first reaction: panic.
Don't panic. This is how Google Ads billing normally works. But you need to understand the logic to avoid surprises.
How Google Ads Charges You
Google uses a billing threshold system. It's not a fixed monthly charge like a Netflix subscription.
The Threshold Mechanism
Your account has a billing threshold. When your ad spend reaches that threshold, Google charges you automatically.
Thresholds progress like this for new accounts:
- First threshold: $50
- Then $100, $200, $350, $500
With each successful payment, the threshold increases. If a payment fails, the threshold drops back to the previous level.
End-of-Month Charge
On top of threshold charges, Google debits the remaining balance on the first of the following month. Even if the threshold wasn't reached.
Concrete example: your threshold is $200. On March 31st, you've spent $147 since the last charge. Google charges $147 on April 1st.
Why Multiple Charges Per Month
If you spend $80/day and your threshold is $200, Google charges roughly every 2.5 days. That's about 12 charges per month. This is normal.
The number of charges depends on two variables: your daily budget and your billing threshold.
"Google Charged Me More Than My Budget"
Classic scenario: daily budget of $30, so $930/month expected. But the total charges for the month come to $978.
Explanation: Google can spend up to 2x your daily budget on high-demand days to capture more traffic. In return, it spends less on slow days.
The rule: Google will never exceed your monthly budget (daily budget x 30.4). If it does, you're automatically credited. Check in Billing > Transaction statements.

Accepted Payment Methods
- Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) — the most common.
- Debit card — same process as credit cards.
- Direct debit / ACH — charged directly from your bank account. Lower risk of failure due to card limits.
- Wire transfer — only for accounts on monthly invoicing (large advertisers).
Recommendation: direct debit (ACH) is the most reliable method. No card limits, no expiration dates, no security checks that block the charge.
What to Do When a Payment Fails
When a payment fails, Google:
- Automatically retries within 24–48 hours
- Suspends your campaigns if the second attempt fails
- Sends you an email notification
Immediate Actions
- Check your payment method — expired card? Limit reached? Insufficient funds?
- Update if needed — in Tools > Billing > Payment methods.
- Add a backup payment method — Google will automatically switch to it if the primary fails.
- Contact your bank — some banks block Google charges by default (categorized as "online purchases"). Request authorization.
Your campaigns resume automatically once payment is resolved. No need to reactivate them manually.
Identifying Google Ads Charges on Your Statement
Charges appear under these descriptions:
- *GOOGLE ADS followed by a reference number
- GOOGLE ADS followed by your account ID
- *GOOGLE ADVERTISING (less common)
If you have any doubt, compare the amount and date with the transaction statements in your Google Ads account (Billing > Transaction statements).
Suspicious Charges: What to Check
Before disputing with your bank:
- Verify no one else has access to your account — a former agency, a team member who launched campaigns without telling you.
- Check for active campaigns — maybe a forgotten campaign is still running.
- Check the MCC — if your account is linked to an MCC with centralized billing, the charge may be coming from there.
If after investigation the charge is illegitimate, contact Google Ads support before filing a dispute with your bank. A bank dispute can result in the permanent suspension of your Google Ads account.
Conclusion
Google Ads charges follow a threshold-based system, not a fixed monthly payment. Multiple charges per month, variable amounts, daily overages offset over time — all of this is normal.
The reflex to adopt: add a backup payment method and check your transaction statements in Google Ads once a month.
